Go-Go putting on pads?...Saturday's Lineups: Twins vs. Astros

The Twins have been graced by some visits from various Vikings coaches this week and on Saturday, it was new special teams coordinator Brian Murphy who stopped by to take in batting practice.

During manager Ron Gardenhire's pre-game media session, he was told that Murphy was chatting with Carlos Gomez. Gardenhire joked that Murphy must have been watching Friday night's game and saw Gomez and Delmon Young provide double coverage on a fly ball hit deep to left field by Lance Berkman in the ninth inning.

"That was our zone coverage he saw in left last night," Gardenhire said with a laugh. "So he knows that Gomez can run and get down on kickoffs."

While Gardenhire joked earlier in the week that the Vikings couldn't steal away Joe Mauer to be their quarterback if Brett Favre doesn't come to Minnesota, he seemed to actually enjoy the idea of Gomez getting on the football field.

"We can let him use Go-Go," the Twins skipper said. "I'd love to see him in pads, to tell you the truth. That would be entertaining for me. I would pay to watch him play football."

As for news, Joe Crede got a day off to rest some usual bumps and bruises. Gardenhire said that he was planning on giving Crede a breather on either Saturday or Sunday but felt this was the best day with a left-hander on the mound for the Astros in Sunday's sereis finale.

Kevin Slowey was feeling better on Saturday after leaving his start on Friday night at the end of the sixth inning due to some stiffness in his right side. Gardenhire said that Slowey described it feeling just like his arm does the day after a start -- sore. The skipper also added that the club will know more about the injury after Slowey throws his normal bullpen session.
